Top 100 Honor Business Acumen

Iannone says way out of slump is with small, medium firms
The way out of the recession and into a sustained recovery is through small- and medium-sized businesses, ones that didn’t rely on a federal bailout.
That was the assessment given Thursday by John Iannone, founder and CEO of Auction Direct USA, the No. 1 company in the 2009 Rochester Top 100, as he spoke at the 23rd annual luncheon honoring the region’s fastest-growing private businesses.
The event drew 1,800 people to the Riverside Convention Center.
Economists have said the vast majority of new jobs after the 1990–91 and 2001 recessions were created by small businesses, though there is concern that such businesses might lack the financial strength to repeat their past hiring successes.
Iannone acknowledged that during the depths of the recession, lending from banks tightened considerably. The Federal Reserve said this week that credit remains tight.
But the positive statements echoing through the convention center indicated that Top 100 businesses are upbeat about their prospects coming out of the economic downturn.
Executives of the No. 2 company, the telecommunications firm 5LINX® Enterprises Inc., said their goal is to build revenue from an anticipated $52 million this year to $1 billion in five years. CEO Craig J. Jerabeck said the company is having a good year despite the recession. 5LINX® recently bought a portion of a smaller telecom, Kancharla Corp. of Huntsville, N.C., for $3 million.

Once Reseller, 5LINX® Now Is Telecom
Reported by: Matthew Daneman, Staff Writer
It started with a woman in Maryland, who hadn't seen her family in west Africa for years, sending a 5Linx video phone to family there.
The Henrietta company, seeing a potentially huge market with the Nigerian expatriate community in the United States, earlier this fall opened an office there. That came after a new office earlier this year in Sweden and one expected by year's end in South Korea.
And 5LINX Enterprises Inc. — which started in 2001 as a telecommunications version of Amway or Mary Kay — continued morphing into a telecom company in its own right.
"We're a carrier now, not a reseller anymore," said CEO Craig J. Jerabeck.

5LINX® Employees Get Bonuses
Reported by: Jecoliah Ellis
One of Rochester’s top companies is giving back to its employees. 5LINX® is handing out more than $125,000 in bonuses. This in no easy feat in a tough economy.
Jose Beltran works in the call center at 5LINX® in Henrietta. Every day he works hard to provide for his two sons. “You hear every place they’re laying off and cutting back and this company fortunately has been on the up and up,” said Jose.
When Jose gets his paycheck this week there will be a bonus in it. The company’s doing well so it wanted to help its employees. “I’m the only income right now at the home so when I tell you this is a great time it is,” said Jose.
5LINX® provides service for digital phones. The Henrietta based company employs 170 people. ”We haven’t had to lay off anyone which has been wonderful but we have had to ask people to do more and the teams stepped up so business continues to grow,” said Craig Jerabeck, 5LINX® CEO.
CEO Craig Jerabeck says the past three quarters they weren’t in a position to hand out bonuses. But after a great second quarter things are looking up. “We want to create a family atmosphere here and we’re all in this together so we had the opportunity to spread the wealth so to speak and my partners and I decided this was the right time to do it,” said Jerabeck.
Jose’ counting his blessings. “You just think Thank God I have a job because not everyone has a job right now and then on top of that to receive a bonus in this economy you can't ask for more,” said Jose.
The bonuses were given out based on a percentage of how much the employee makes. They ranged from about $220 to $5,000.

Direct Sales (Like Avon, Mary Kay) Offer Recession-Proof Jobs
By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY
Direct-sales businesses that rely on home-based representatives to peddle their wares are seeing their sales forces rapidly expand as the nation’s unemployment rate soars to nearly 9% and those who lost jobs and nest eggs look for new ways to make money.
“We’re recession-resistant in the sense that more people come to us during economic hard times for supplemental income or replacement of a lost job,” says Neil Offen, president of the Direct Selling Association, the trade group that represents the largest U.S. direct sales companies.
While 2008 industry figures aren’t yet available, “Anecdotally we’re hearing that recruitment is up and ... unfortunately as the unemployment rate rises to 10% or higher, we’ll be picking up more people who need an income-earning opportunity.”

Students Connect Through VideoPhones
Reported by Meghan Backus
A new tool being used in local classrooms could help bridge achievement gaps between urban and suburban schools.
Students in the Rochester City School District had a chance to try out a videophone Tuesday. They connected with a special guest.
Superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard visited third graders at School 22 without leaving his office.
He has a videophone at his desk. Around lunchtime Brizard called the videophone in the library at School 22. He was able to see and hear students and they were able to see and hear him.
They had a chance to ask their superintendent questions for the first time.
The videophone pilot project is a part of Kidbridge, a program developed by the Rochester Education Foundation. The six-year old program focuses on leveling the playing field for kids from all schools.

Court Supports FCC In VoIP Regulation
Associated Press, March 22, 2007
A federal appeals court upheld a decision by the Federal Communications Commission that barred states from regulating Internet-based phone services, an Associated Press report said.
The Associated Press report said a three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the FCC’s determination in 2004 that companies like Vonage Holdings provide an interstate service that puts them outside state control.
Vonage uses VoIP, which involves converting the sound of a voice into packets of data and reassembling them into sound at the other end of the call. In 2003, Minnesota’s Public Utilities Commission tried to register Vonage as a phone company, which would have subjected it to state tariffs and rate regulations, the report said. A federal judge barred Minnesota from doing so, and a year later at Vonage’s request the FCC ruled that the company’s services could not be regulated by the states.
Regulatory agencies in a number of states, including Minnesota, appealed that ruling, the report said. In the decision authored by Fargo, N.D.-based 8th Circuit Judge Kermit Bye, the court agreed with the FCC’s determination that the nature of VoIP telephone calls allows customers to place “home” phone calls from nearly anywhere, irrespective of state lines, the report added.
When the FCC issued its ruling in 2004, officials with the agency indicated that they believed streamlined regulation was key to the growth of the fledgling industry.
The report further quoted Vonage CEO Mike Snyder as saying that the decision was good news for the company’s 2.2 million subscribers.
Making the World Smaller
When Tara Oliver, 34, found out that her husband may soon be deployed for Iraq, she was concerned about how they would stay in touch.
It wouldn’t be the first time her husband, Dale, a Navy Reservist, would be away. “My son was only 10 days old when he had to be away for a year,” Oliver says. His assignment was isolation duty, meaning he couldn’t take his family with him.
Now that they’re parents of five, Oliver says she was concerned that her husband would miss out on some of the important everyday events in their children’s lives. That’s why she’s purchased a GLOBALINX® VideoPhone, a new product that has been released by 5LINX®, a Rochester, N.Y.-based telecommunications company.

Young Company Focus: 5LINX™
When a company has to rewrite its business plan, things usually haven’t been going too well. That’s not so for Rochester, N.Y.-based 5LINX™, a telecommunications company that sells its products and services through a network of dedicated independent business representatives. Just the opposite is true. Explosive growth in business operations, particularly its GLOBALINX™ Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) subsidiary, forced company executives to revise their targets significantly upward. “In March, after our Spring National, things just went ballistic,” says President and CEO Craig Jerabeck. “We’re going to finish 2006 about 50 percent ahead of plan. Then in 2007, we’re going to be almost 220 percent of our plan. We just had to rewrite the plan!”
