    Inc 5000 logo
  • No. 336: 5LINX Enterprises, Inc.
  • Location: Rochester, NY
  • Year: 2007
  • Industry: Telecommunications
  • Founded: 2001
  • Growth: 807.5%
  • 2003 Revenue: $1.4 million

Ranked No. 18 in the Top Companies in Telecommunications.

What it does: Using a Mary Kay-like direct-selling model, 5LINX sells voice over Internet protocol and cellular services to individuals and small businesses.

Why it's growing: In the face of competition from huge cable companies selling VoIP, CEO Craig Jerabeck and his growing crew have focused on niche products--such as Internet-enabled videophones--which are pitched to consumers with friends and family overseas.

What's noteworthy: When 5LINX made the 2006 Inc. 500, it was primarily reselling services provided by other companies and receiving commissions on each sale. Today it has its own VoIP network, which allows it to capture a greater share of revenue from each customer.

Network of Agents Drives 5LINX Sales

Democrat & Chronicle, October 28, 2007

The company is No. 5 on this year’s Top 100, a list of area firms with the highest revenue gains in the past three years.

This is 5LINX’s second year on the Top 100 list, as well as on Inc. magazine’s annual list of fastest-growing companies.

5LINX is on a pace to reach $27 million in revenue this year, up from $12.5 million last year, Jerabeck said. Next year’s revenue could be as high as $50 million.

The growth was evident earlier this month at 5LINX’s new headquarters on Kenneth Drive, off Lehigh Station Road in Henrietta. The call-center cubicles were still under construction, and the training room was full of new workers.

Court Supports FCC In VoIP Regulation

Associated Press, March 22, 2007

A federal appeals court upheld a decision by the Federal Communications Commission that barred states from regulating Internet-based phone services, an Associated Press report said.

The Associated Press report said a three-judge panel of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the FCC’s determination in 2004 that companies like Vonage Holdings provide an interstate service that puts them outside state control.

Vonage uses VoIP, which involves converting the sound of a voice into packets of data and reassembling them into sound at the other end of the call. In 2003, Minnesota’s Public Utilities Commission tried to register Vonage as a phone company, which would have subjected it to state tariffs and rate regulations, the report said. A federal judge barred Minnesota from doing so, and a year later at Vonage’s request the FCC ruled that the company’s services could not be regulated by the states.

Regulatory agencies in a number of states, including Minnesota, appealed that ruling, the report said. In the decision authored by Fargo, N.D.-based 8th Circuit Judge Kermit Bye, the court agreed with the FCC’s determination that the nature of VoIP telephone calls allows customers to place “home” phone calls from nearly anywhere, irrespective of state lines, the report added.

When the FCC issued its ruling in 2004, officials with the agency indicated that they believed streamlined regulation was key to the growth of the fledgling industry.

The report further quoted Vonage CEO Mike Snyder as saying that the decision was good news for the company’s 2.2 million subscribers.

Making the World Smaller

Picture (by Ron Agnir) of Melanie Pierce, right, independent representative for 5LINX talks with 5LINX founder Jason Guck over the Globallink Video Phone.

When Tara Oliver, 34, found out that her husband may soon be deployed for Iraq, she was concerned about how they would stay in touch.

It wouldn’t be the first time her husband, Dale, a Navy Reservist, would be away. “My son was only 10 days old when he had to be away for a year,” Oliver says. His assignment was isolation duty, meaning he couldn’t take his family with him.

Now that they’re parents of five, Oliver says she was concerned that her husband would miss out on some of the important everyday events in their children’s lives. That’s why she’s purchased a GLOBALINX™ VideoPhone, a new product that has been released by 5LINX®, a Rochester, N.Y.-based telecommunications company.

Young Company Focus: 5LINX™

Picture of the Young Company Focus article.

When a company has to rewrite its business plan, things usually haven’t been going too well. That’s not so for Rochester, N.Y.-based 5LINX™, a telecommunications company that sells its products and services through a network of dedicated independent business representatives. Just the opposite is true. Explosive growth in business operations, particularly its GLOBALINX™ Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) subsidiary, forced company executives to revise their targets significantly upward. “In March, after our Spring National, things just went ballistic,” says President and CEO Craig Jerabeck. “We’re going to finish 2006 about 50 percent ahead of plan. Then in 2007, we’re going to be almost 220 percent of our plan. We just had to rewrite the plan!”
